NSDR and yoga nidra: what the sleep trials found

NSDR, or non-sleep deep rest, is the podcast-era label for guided body-scan rest. The oldest version is yoga nidra. A 2025 review gathered the trials on sleep, and they are promising, small and uneven.

Key points

  • NSDR, or non-sleep deep rest, is a modern label for guided rest practices such as yoga nidra.
  • A 2025 review found six randomized trials of yoga nidra for sleep, with 244 people in total.
  • Most trials reported better sleep onset, total sleep or sleep efficiency.
  • Most were at moderate to high risk of bias, and safety was poorly reported.
  • It is free, low-risk and easy to try. Treat it as one part of a wind-down, not a fix for everything.

Two names, one idea

Yoga nidra is a guided practice done lying down. A voice leads you through your body, part by part, with attention to breath and sensation, while you stay awake but deeply at rest. NSDR, short for non-sleep deep rest, is the newer, secular name that spread through podcasts and short videos.

The research almost all sits under the older name, so that is where we looked.

What the trials found

A 2025 systematic review searched four major databases for randomized trials of yoga nidra and sleep. It found six, with 244 participants. They included people with chronic or acute insomnia, people with high blood pressure, healthcare workers during COVID-19, and athletes.[61]

Most of the trials reported gains in sleep onset, total sleep time and sleep efficiency. Some compared yoga nidra with established approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, muscle relaxation and music.[61]

a voice, a quiet room and twenty minutes. the trials kept it that simple.

Why the evidence is early

  • Small. 244 people across six trials.
  • Mixed. Different groups, session lengths and outcome measures.
  • Bias. Most trials were at moderate to high risk, mainly from lack of blinding and incomplete reporting.
  • Safety. Side effects were poorly reported.

The authors called it promising and asked for high-quality trials before it is folded into standard care.[61] That is a fair summary.

How a session works

  1. Lie on your back somewhere quiet, with a light blanket.
  2. Play a guided recording of 10 to 30 minutes.
  3. Follow the voice as it moves attention around your body and your breath.
  4. If you drift off at night, that is fine. In the day, set a gentle alarm.

Where it fits

Stress and bedtime worry are well-known drivers of insomnia,[1] and a guided rest practice gives the mind something calmer to do. If nights stay rough, track them. Sleep diaries are recommended before and during insomnia care,[21] and ours is free to use.

Pair it with slow breathing, or read our sleepmaxxing roundup to see where it ranks among other bedtime trends.

Rest is a skill. We share the research.
