Waking at night

5 questions

Is it normal to wake up during the night?

Yes. Brief awakenings are part of normal sleep and become more common with age.[6] Time awake after first falling asleep also tends to rise as we get older.[5]

Why do I wake up around 3 AM?

The second half of the night holds lighter sleep and longer REM periods, so it’s easier to surface.[4] Caffeine, alcohol, evening light, schedule changes, stress, menopause and health conditions can all play a part.[1][18] Read the full explainer.

When should I talk to a clinician about waking at night?

When poor sleep affects your daily life, or if you notice loud snoring, gasping, pauses in breathing or waking often to urinate.[3][19] You don’t need to have tracked anything first.

Does alcohol help you sleep?

It can speed falling asleep, but it tends to add disruption to the second half of the night.[15]

How late is too late for caffeine?

It differs between people. In one small trial, a large dose still disrupted sleep when taken six hours before bed.[13] Recording the time of your last cup is a simple way to see your own pattern.

Cortisol

3 questions

Does waking at 3 AM mean my cortisol is high?

Not on its own. Cortisol normally begins rising around 2 to 3 AM.[8] Whether it’s abnormal can only be assessed with clinical testing, usually more than one test.[24][25]

Is adrenal fatigue real?

A systematic review found no evidence that adrenal fatigue is an actual medical condition, and the Endocrine Society says the same.[22][23]

Can poor sleep affect cortisol?

In a lab study of healthy young men, a night of partial or total sleep loss was followed by higher cortisol the next evening.[12] It was a small study, so it shows a direction rather than a rule. More on cortisol and sleep.
